LABOUR PLEDGE FREE FIBRE BROADBAND FOR EVERY HOUSEHOLD AND BUSINESS

Labour have announced a radical plan to nationalise BT Openreach (the part of BT that owns the cables running into our homes) so that going forward public investment (currently subsidy) in rolling out fibre broadband to every residence and business benefits the country not BT shareholders.

We’ll then introduce a new tax on major tech companies like Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple which are underpaying their fair share under the current corporation tax model and use the revenue generated from these massive global companies to provide high speed (fibre) broadband to all businesses and households FREE OF CHARGE.

  • we’ll put priority on connecting up the previously left behind most remote rural areas. BT’s rollout of fibre has been way behind schedule and in need of public subsidy anyways

  • free broadband saves the average household £30 a month on their bills - a lifeline for those struggling and for others it’ll mean more money spent on retail, hospitality or tourism instead thus creating jobs in those sectors

  • access to the internet will be equal so no longer will children in low income families have to stay behind in school or go to the local library to get access for their homework

  • with faster speeds for all productivity will dramatically increase allowing us to deliver our pledge of a 4 day week by 2030

  • faster speeds for all will also mean more can work at home reducing congestion in our towns, improving air quality, cutting emissions and improving quality of life

  • finally, faster speeds for all will make the U.K. a more attractive place for technology companies to invest - we should aspire to top the world rankings on broadband coverage and speed
