who am i?

I'm Jonny Roberts. I'm 30 years old, I grew up nearby in Aylesbury and I now live in Newbury with my wife Adriana and our daughter Valentina (who features probably too prominently on my Instagram!).

I joined Labour as a student eight years ago to help stop the Tories in the 2010 general election. I joined the local campaign and led the operation to get the student vote out and was delighted when my MP at the time - the wonderful Paul Flynn - was re-elected.

After uni, Adriana and I moved to Newbury, and I started working for a Bracknell-based company organising public policy conferences.

In Newbury I've been the CLP's Youth Officer (2011), the CLP Vice-Chair (2016), stood for council twice (2011, 2015) and - after coming 2nd in selections for Aylesbury and Wycombe - I was honoured to be selected to be Labour's Parliamentary candidate for Newbury in 2015.

In 2014 I ran a successful campaign to convince the local council to launch a collective energy switching scheme to help residents reduce their bills.

I am also a proud member of the Co-operative Party, Labour Campaign for International Development and the GMB trade union.

LABOUR'S PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE FOR NEWBURY IN 2015

As Labour's candidate for Newbury I campaigned with street stalls, visits to local groups and 6th forms, door-to-door canvassing, taking part in hustings and getting myself heard in the local media. On social media I utilised paid-for targeted advertising and video content (thanks to my friend, film producer, Jonathan Dunn) which you can see here.

In Newbury we had very limited resources but despite our small CLP I was delighted to win Labour’s then highest vote since Joan Ruddock stood in 1979.

WHY WYCOMBE?

I was born and raised in Aylesbury but my family history is rooted in High Wycombe.

My grandmother was born here and lived here until her death earlier this year. She met my grandfather here, and my Mum was born here. She, in turn, met my Dad here. And then my sister was born here!

Growing up, I spent most weekends here with my grandparents, and in 2006 I spent some time working in Wycombe as part of Sainsbury’s Trainee Management scheme.

Wycombe has played a big part in my life. I'm determined to see it represented in Parliament by a Labour MP for the first time since 1951. Steve 'Hard Brexit' Baker and his fellow Tories are presiding over crises in housing, health, social care, energy, education and welfare. They have no idea what to do about it, and we are seeing the impact on people in Wycombe.

With the right campaign we can win in Wycombe, and I will do all I can to show you that I can deliver that victory.

HOW THE SELECTION PROCESS WORKS...

Wycombe is one of Labour's 70+ target seats for the next General Election, and is having an early selection. I’ll add more details as they’re announced, but here’s the essentials:

  1. DONE: The CLP elect members to the Selection Committee

  2. DONE: Candidates put their name forward (applications close March 22nd)

  3. DONE: The Selection Committee creates a ‘longlist’ from the applications

  4. DONE: The longlisted candidates are invited for interview, with a successful few progressing to the shortlist (3rd & 4th April)

  5. All members in the CLP have the chance to hear from the shortlisted candidates and elect a winner after a hustings session (22nd April)

ONLY A LABOUR GOVERNMENT CAN TACKLE THE HOUSING CRISIS

IN 2018 BRITAIN HOMELESSNESS JUST SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING.

I WILL RELENTLESSLY HOLD STEVE BAKER ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS GOVERNMENT'S FAILURE ON HOUSING THAT IS SEEING HOMELESSNESS SOARING, 1.3MILLION FAMILIES ON SOCIAL HOUSING WAITING LISTS, RENTS THROUGH THE ROOF AND HOME OWNERSHIP FALLING

25 ideas in 25 days

When I ran for the National Policy Forum in September 2015, 25 days out from the ballots closing I started posting 25 ideas - one a day - to demonstrate the kind of fresh thinking I'd bring to the Forum.

The idea was for these to be micro-ideas that supplemented the radical policies that Jeremy Corbyn would later bring to the fore so wonderfully in our 2017 manifesto 'For the many, not the few'.

One (maintenance loans for part-time students) has since become government policy and another (extending maternity pay to 52 weeks) has become Labour policy but the others remain ideas I'm keen to see the party pursue and will be submitting to the National Policy Forum again this time around.

My 25 ideas in 25 days

Click on the idea to see my proposal in more detail...

Idea 1: All fines should be levied proportional to income

Idea 2: Make the energy companies pay for the Winter Fuel Allowance

Idea 3: Bring back the Child Trust Fund...but better

Idea 4: Electric car charging points for every block of flats

Idea 5: Be bold & long-term on high-speed rail (a truly national new network of maglev trains)

Idea 6: Abolish the 11+

Idea 7: Mutualise the BBC

Idea 8: A Chief Technology Officer for every LEP region

Idea 9: Maintenance loans for part-time students

Idea 10: Allow self-referral to physiotherapists

Idea 11: Support British film by turning BBC Films into a distributor

Idea 12: Future generations impact assessments on all policies

Idea 13: An Early Intervention Audit Committee

Idea 14: Empower teachers with proper technology training

Idea 15: Taking a global lead on the 'circular economy' and committing to zero waste to landfill by 2030

Idea 16: Regulate student rents

Idea 17: Regional Arts Councils for a devolved England

Idea 18: Free home security improvements for the most vulnerable

Idea 19: Use fines for failure to buy shares in public utilities and give them to citizens to mutualise them

Idea 20: Support the divestment movement and take a lead with council pension funds

Idea 21: Split alcohol duty - one (higher) rate for retailers and another rate for pubs and clubs

Idea 22: Extend Statutory Maternity Pay to 52 weeks

Idea 23: Roll-out free gym, swimming and other activities at local authority leisure centres

Idea 24: Extend the school day to 5pm

Idea 25: Nationalise Openreach
